TEXAS HOUSE DEMOCRATS TO MEET WITH NEW MEXICO GOVERNOR, EXPANDING NATIONAL COALITION AGAINST TRUMP/ABBOTT POWER GRAB

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Following successful meetings with the governors of California and Illinois, a new delegation of Texas House Democrats left the state this morning for one day of meetings with New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. The meeting continues the Caucus’ national effort to build a firewall against the corrupt, racially-motivated redistricting scheme being forced on Texans by Donald Trump via Greg Abbott and raise awareness of the national implications of their redistricting scam — which aims to protect politicians who slashed health care, food aid, and jobs for Texas families while shifting the burden to our state.

The delegation to New Mexico includes:

Speaker pro Tempore Joe Moody Redistricting Committee Vice Chair Jon Rosenthal Rep. Salman Bhojani Rep. John Bucy Rep. Erin Gámez Rep. Josey Garcia Rep. Christian Manuel

"We’re traveling to meet with leaders who put people first in a crisis," said Speaker pro Tempore Joe Moody. "A recent flood in Ruidoso took three lives, and disaster relief there has been New Mexico’s top priority since. Meanwhile, weeks after devastating floods that killed 137 people — many of them children — families in the Hill Country are still waiting and watching as our state puts a divisive political power grab first. Stealing elections doesn’t rebuild a single Texas life. We’re seeking serious, productive conversations with other governors about how to solve the real problems Texans expect and deserve their leaders to solve."

The caucus is taking its case national while Governor Abbott continues to ignore the urgent needs of flood victims in Central Texas, holding disaster relief hostage to his partisan power grab. House Democrats have made it clear they are ready to work on flood relief and other pressing issues, but will not legitimize a corrupt process designed to harm Texas voters.

“Our message to leaders across the country has been simple: if they can steal five seats in Texas by breaking the rules, your state is next," said Redistricting Committee Vice Chair Jon Rosenthal. "This is a racially motivated scheme designed to silence the growing power of Black and Brown communities. It's happening because they know they will be held accountable in a fair election for the damage they've done to Texas families. We are grateful that Governor Lujan Grisham understands the stakes, and we look forward to a productive conversation about how we can work together to protect every American's right to have their voice heard."
