Texas House Democrats Remember Rep. Sylvester Turner

AUSTIN, TEXAS — The Texas House Democratic Caucus joins Houstonians and Texans across the state in mourning the loss of Rep. Sylvester Turner, who served with distinction for 27 years in the Texas House of Representatives before becoming Houston's mayor and representative in Congress. He will be remembered as a champion for working families, infrastructure investment, and economic opportunity for all Texans.

“Sylvester Turner was known as the conscience of the Texas House, bringing moral clarity and a deep commitment to his community back home in Houston to every debate and policy discussion” said Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Gene Wu. “Rep. Turner’s legacy of fighting for affordable housing, disaster recovery, and criminal justice reform continues to inspire and guide our caucus today. The wisdom, integrity, and strategic vision he brought to public service will continue to inspire generations of Texans committed to building a more just and equitable state.”

As a member of the Texas House of Representatives, Rep. Turner was known for his advocacy for Houston's most vulnerable communities and his ability to build coalitions across party lines. As mayor, he led Houston through some of the city's most challenging times: Hurricane Harvey, the COVID-19 pandemic, and historic winter storms that tested the city's resilience. As a congressman, he fought tirelessly to protect Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security benefits. And throughout his life, he brought joy and laughter to those who knew him, reminding everyone he met that public service at its finest springs from a place of deep compassion and abiding hope.

The Texas House Democratic Caucus extends its condolences to Rep. Turner's family, friends, and the entire Houston community. House Democrats will remain dedicated to advancing the causes he championed throughout his remarkable career of public service.
