AUSTIN, TEXAS — Texas House Democratic Caucus Leader Gene Wu released the following statement following yesterday's fatal ICE enforcement operation in Houston that resulted in the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo:
"Yesterday's fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an ICE enforcement operation in Houston has left an entire community searching for answers. My thoughts are with Mr. Salgado Araujo's family, his loved ones, and the residents of Magnolia Park as they navigate this loss.
"Whenever a law enforcement encounter ends in the loss of life, the public deserves a full, transparent, and independent accounting of what happened. That standard should apply equally to every law enforcement agency – especially with federal agencies like ICE. Texans should expect the same level of transparency and accountability from federal immigration authorities as they do from any other law enforcement agency.
"I join community leaders in calling for a thorough, independent investigation and the timely release of all available evidence. We owe it to the Araujo family, the Magnolia Park community, and all Texans to ensure the facts are fully known."
