ABBOTT CHICKENED OUT: FIRST CORRUPT SPECIAL SESSION NEARLY DEFEATED

Republicans will adjourn sine die Friday without achieving their goals — House Democrats held the line despite threats, surveillance, lawfare

**CHICAGO — **After Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows announced today that Republicans will adjourn sine die on Friday if there’s still no quorum (hint: there won’t be), Texas House Democrats have killed this corrupt special session on behalf of Texas families — exactly what we said we’d do when we left the state. Meanwhile, Governor Abbott continues to withhold flood relief to families, something he could do immediately with the emergency powers granted to him.

With only 95 members present and no quorum in sight, Republicans set up surveillance outside our homes, created tiplines for bounty hunters, called in bomb threats on our location, and took cops off the beat for political purposes. The result? Abbott was forced to abuse procedural tactics and threaten a second special session to help them steal what they cannot win in 2026.

Greg Abbott is a thief. He’s the most corrupt governor in America. Washington asked him for an illegal favor. He overpromised and under-delivered — because Texas House Democrats stood up to him and said, “Hell no, Washington billionaires do not get to trample the rights of our state.”

“We said we would defeat Abbott’s first corrupt special session, and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” said Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Gene Wu. “Now, the ball is in Abbott’s court: He can stop blocking flood relief immediately. Stop playing political games, stop pretending to be sheriff, and finally get to work on behalf of Texas families. Abbott can call a special session today that is dedicated to honoring the loss and memory of the July 4th flooding victims — or, he can once again put DC corruption ahead of Texas communities."

Texas House Democrats are ready to pass real flood relief. We’re ready to fund disaster preparedness. We’re ready to help the communities that are still rebuilding from the deadliest flood Texas has seen in over 100 years.

But if Texas Republicans continue putting corrupt politics before the interests of flood victims, as we said one month ago: “all options are on the table.
