Texas HDC Education Working Group Responds to New School Reopening Guidelines

(TEXAS) – The Texas Education Agency just released updated guidance for returning to schools in the fall. The new plan allows individual school systems to limit on-campus instruction for up to the first eight weeks of school. These changes override the TEA’s original guidelines that would require all schools to return to in-person instruction in order to receive funding.

The Texas House Democratic Caucus’ Education Working Group released the following joint statement in response:

“We stand committed to listening to our families, educators and students in the decisions regarding school openings. We appreciate the additional flexibility announced today in TEA’s guidelines. However, our initial concern remains the same — prioritizing the health of our local communities, while also ensuring schools have resources necessary to reopen safely in the fall, whenever that may be.

“We encourage TEA and our state’s leadership to further develop school opening plans that are centered on scientific information and recommendations, and to establish funding mechanisms that do not punish schools for their decisions.”

The HDC’s Education Working Group is represented by Rep. Alma Allen (Houston), Rep. Terry Canales (Edinburg), Rep. Harold V. Dutton (Houston), Rep. Anna Eastman (Houston), Rep. Art Fierro (El Paso), Rep. Mary Gonzalez (El Paso), Rep. Vikki Goodwin (Austin), Rep. Gina Hinojosa (Austin), Rep. Donna Howard (Austin), Rep. Leo Pacheco (San Antonio), Rep. Ana-Maria Ramos (Dallas) and Rep. James Talarico (Round Rock).
