(TEXAS) – Today, the U.S. House passed H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Chris Turner (D-Grand Prairie) issued the following statement in response:
“The passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act marks an historic moment in our country’s history, and is of monumental importance to all Texas voters, whose freedoms have been under relentless attack by Texas Republicans for years.
“Texas House Democrats are grateful to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, bill sponsor Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Alabama) and all members of Congress who voted today to protect the bedrock right of our democracy — and for accelerating this bill’s passage following our Caucus’ work in Washington, D.C. We are also proud of and thankful for our colleagues who returned to the Capitol to be present for this important moment.
“The John Lewis Voting Rights Act means the federal government will once again be able to protect Americans from anti-voter laws and discriminatory redistricting plans.
“We urge the U.S. Senate to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and send it to the president’s desk without delay.”
