Speaker Pro Tem Joe Moody Responds to Signing of Anti-Gun Safety Legislation

(TEXAS) – Today, Gov. Greg Abbott held a press conference to sign several pieces of anti-gun safety legislation into law, including the permitless carry bill that would remove any licensing requirements for carrying a handgun.

Speaker Pro Tem Joe Moody (D-El Paso) released the following statement in response on behalf of the Texas House Democratic Caucus:

“It’s been almost two years since the racially motivated mass shooting in El Paso. A lot of promises were made after that tragedy. This session, when there was a chance to make good on those promises, what we got was a partisan blockade of common-sense reforms to our gun safety laws. Instead of fixing our broken background check system, Texas Republicans voted to make it even harder to tell whether someone who has a gun will act responsibly with it — until the shooting starts and all doubt is removed.

“It’s unconscionable for the governor to sign any of these bills into law when Texas Republicans have stood in the way of real reforms that could prevent the next El Paso, the next Midland-Odessa, the next Sutherland Springs, the next Santa Fe, and on and on and on. The 87th Session may be over, but House Democrats will never stop pushing for laws to ensure our schools, communities, and homes are safe from gun violence.”
