(Austin, TEXAS) – Yesterday, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported a Connally Independent School District campus was closing after two teachers passed away from COVID-19 in a week.
Rep. Alma Allen (D-Houston), the Texas House Democratic Caucus whip and a retired teacher, issued the following statement in response.
“Our hearts go out to the family, colleagues and students grieving the loss of the two Waco school teachers who recently passed away from COVID-19.
“Although just this week the Texas House passed a bill related to virtual learning in schools, our teachers, students and families need quicker, more comprehensive tools to educate safely. Our state has consistently had one of the highest rates of transmission, hospitalization and death related to COVID-19.
“The situation in Texas is dangerous. We need Gov. Greg Abbott to use his full authority under the Texas Disaster Act and actually institute a policy that will keep Texans safe. The Governor must instruct the Texas Education Agency to seek a waiver to immediately fund temporary remote instruction right now. Educators’ and children’s lives depend on it.”
