New Report Shows Staggering 29% of Texans Under 65 Are Now Uninsured

(TEXAS) – A new report from Families USA shows the devastating effects the pandemic has had on Texas’ already abysmal uninsured rate. State Representative and Chair of the Texas House Democratic Caucus Chris Turner released the following statement in response:

“This report, which shows a staggering 29% of Texans under 65 now lack health insurance, is a damning indictment of repeated failures by Republican leaders. Our state’s last place rank for health insurance predates COVID-19, but the complete mismanagement of the pandemic by President Trump and Governor Abbott has only made the problem worse.

“For years, Governor Abbott and Republicans in the Legislature have actively opposed expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, even though we have long had the most uninsured of any state. Even worse, the Trump Administration and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton continue to try to overturn the ACA in court. If they were ever successful, millions more would lose coverage.

“It is well past time for Texas to expand Medicaid and drop the lawsuits. Governor Abbott has the ability to do so today — he just has to put politics aside and do the right thing.”

The Texas House Democratic Caucus, which is composed of all Democrats in the Texas House, serves as the group’s membership services and logistical arm, and works to support House Democrats with communications, policy, and legal resources. Chaired by Rep. Chris Turner (D – Grand Prairie), the Caucus is focused on fighting for real solutions for all Texans.
