House Democrats Fight Back as Republicans Push Anti-Voter Bill Out of Committee

(TEXAS) – This morning, Texas Republicans pushed the anti-voter House Bill 6 out of the House Committee on Elections with a narrow 5-4 vote along party lines.

Elections Vice Chair Jessica González (D-Dallas) and Representatives Michelle Beckley (D-Carrollton), John Bucy (D-Austin) and Art Fierro (D-El Paso) were the only Members to take a stand against the blatantly discriminatory and suppressive tactics in the legislation.

House Democratic Caucus Chair Chris Turner (D-Grand Prairie) issued the following statement in response:

“House Bill 6 is a backwards attempt by House Republicans to further the big Republican lie that the 2020 election was stolen. By steamrolling ahead with this anti-voter bill, Republicans are forcing everyday Texans — and especially Texans of color — to sacrifice their constitutional rights for the sake of this political circus.”

Elections Vice Chair Jessica González added the following:

“Chair Cain and his Republican colleagues were clearly unfazed by the hours and hours of testimony we heard last week attesting to the disparate impact House Bill 6 will have against racial minorities, senior citizens and the disabled community. It’s disgraceful, and my fellow Democratic committee members and I will not stop fighting to protect our democracy from the political threats made by these Trump Republicans.”
