HDC Chair Responds to Attorney General’s Attack on Texans’ Health Care

(TEXAS) – Today, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a brief requesting the United States Supreme Court torpedo the Affordable Care Act — which, if overturned, would result in a 37 percent increase in the state’s uninsured rate (already the highest in the country). State Representative and Chair of the Texas House Democratic Caucus Chris Turner released the following statement in response:

“Only Ken Paxton would have the gall to once again try to overturn the Affordable Care Act during this unprecedented public health crisis. More than a million Texans have health insurance thanks to the ACA. And over 1 million more of our neighbors would be able to find coverage if Gov. Abbott, Paxton and the Republicans in the Legislature would quit stonewalling our efforts to expand Medicaid.

“Even if there was no pandemic, the AG’s announcement would be callous and short sighted. To take this action now, when more Texans are losing coverage and as COVID-19 cases spike across the state, is nothing short of malicious.”
