(TEXAS) – Today, Gov. Greg Abbott issued a proclamation that allegedly authorizes the Texas National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety to apprehend individuals crossing the Texas-Mexico border. It is unclear what the practical impact of this proclamation will be, if any.
Texas HDC Chair Chris Turner (D-Grand Prairie) issued the following statement in response:
“Today’s announcement is nothing more than Gov. Abbott’s latest political stunt to distract Texans from his continued failures as governor.
“Today, we learned that under Abbott’s leadership, the staffing shortage at the Texas Juvenile Justice Department has gotten so bad that kids are being locked up in their rooms for up to 22 hours per day. Every Texan should be outraged by this — especially our governor.
“But instead of managing the crisis at TJJD, instead of trying to address the crisis in the foster care system and instead of responding to bipartisan demands to do something about the gun violence crisis, Abbott retreats to his political safe space — issuing meaningless campaign press releases.”
The Texas House Democratic Caucus, which is composed of all Democrats in the Texas House, serves as the group’s membership services and logistical arm, and works to support House Democrats with communications, policy, and legal resources. Chaired by Rep. Chris Turner (D – Grand Prairie), the Caucus is focused on fighting for real solutions for all Texans.
